End of an era at Videosyncratic

It’s not often I like to get all sickly sentimental on the PoP blog (that may or may not be a lie) but Monday night saw the absolute end of an era in Oxford Town when the Cowley Road branch of Videosyncratic, presumably one of the last remaining independent video-rental businesses in the UK, closed its doors for the final time. Now I know it’s probably been on the cards for a while, and a cynic may say ‘who rents DVDs these days’ and they’re probably right…

But that didn’t stop the hordes of wellwishers, bargain hunters and other randoms who showed up for the final night, along with some of Oxford’s finest musicians, to wave goodbye to the place. Amongst such luminaries as Ute, PoP favourites The Family Machine and the charming Richard Walters (ex BSM) – The Candyskins (or 2 of them at least, performed a tear-jerking acoustic set – whilst everyone fought for the remaining couple of copies of Cool Runnings.

But as the sentiment ebbs away and the dust settles on the memories of a once great institution, I cannot help but be left with some of the comments that I heard while I was in there. “Oh, should have come to this place more often” one fella said, whilst another suggested “used to come here a few years ago before on-demand. Shame it’s shutting down”.

Sure is! But with the passing of Videosyncratic (a shop lest we forget that had branched out into selling toys, tees, comics and investing in films beyond just the renting of movies) comes a timely reminder that bricks and mortar indies do still exist, but are continually under threat as ‘progress’ sweeps our beleagured nation.

Whether it be butchers, DVD establishments or cafes whatever… Lets support the indies! Well – actually, having said that, noone should feel obliged to support the indies – it’s not y/our duty to keep everything alive. But if they care, you care and everything’s good – lets get on it!  Here’s a video of the (very) latter stages of the career of one of my favourite bands ever, fresh from Monday… Viva las Candyskins…

goFASTER>> EP making the summer start early…!

Now currently landing on digital music platforms galore, on the shiny shelves of your favourite indie store – and of course fresh from the Alcopop shop (with a free 4 track EP if you’re very quick… Literally we’re down to the last 10 or so of these) – goFASTER>>’s magnificent debut EP ‘A Modern Education’ is out today, and already making it feel a lot like summer in Alcopop HQ.

The tracklisting for the EP is:
1. A Modern Education
2. Magazine Addiction
3. Good Times
4. You Better Watch Out
5. When the Last Note Sounds

And I guarantee you will love it! Not Ed described the musical treat thusly as “A delectable indie pop four piece from Liverpool who make music in the same lunch-box as Good Shoes and Look See Proof. The EP also has a Hot Club De Paris aura to it, in how the songs all entwine together like they have a big shoelace tied around them” – and I think he’s just about on the nail…. Take a listen to the scouse champs here, and get yourself a piece….

Oh – and don’t forget this EP is available as part of a ‘binge’ style mega-deal package with the My First Tooth EP and one of our rapidly dwindling red white crocodile on skateboard tees too… Ace! Get yourself truly alcopopped ;-)

binge-drinking

Roll up, roll up – CTBW are still great, and my KFC smells of vomit (slightly)

Can’t lie to you dear blog… It’s been a great couple of days! Ever since catching the majestic Stars and Sons with Okkervil River on Tuesday at London Shepherds Bush Empire, and all the glamour, hateful quiz machines and slightly off-vomit smelling KFC that came along with it, it’s been drunken meetings, lots of rum, exciting plans, Guitar Hero 4 and seeing truly inspiring photos. (Coxy you are a genius)

Most importantly though, it’s all good news in the CTBW camp – with a couple of great new reviews about them appearing throughout the land. Rock-metal-mysic-reviews.com have been waxing lyrical about CTBW live in Portsmouth: “The bass and keys seem to fuse together, thickening out the sound while the guitar riffs become sharper and more aggressive, and singer DD Ball sings and wails as if his audience were festival-sized and this was his last day on earth”, while ‘A Short Fanzine about Rocking’ talk of Revert.Restar.Reset as “an absolute belter that leaves me feeling distinctly happy with the world in general.”

Oh – just a quick other point for Oxford based residents, that as well as being stocked in all the nation’s finest indies/HMVs/other big ol’ commercial stores (yada yada yada)… As of next week you’ll be able to buy Alcopop stuff from the city’s finest indie video store – Videosyncratic. Which I thought I’d mention, cos the place is ace – and who can argue with picking up a Sam Isaac release whilst renting Rocky III? No one, that’s who!

Alcopop T-Shirts for sale – Featuring Alcocroc!

You may have bought a record or two, been to the gigs and consumed excessive amounts of Alcopop’s throughout your lives – but today is a dramatically exciting day in Alcopop history… For the first time, I can proudly announce that you can now brand your chest with an Alcopop T-shirt – and not just that, but a rather cool looking crocodile (named Alcocroc) on a skateboard with a cap, and a quote from Alcopop’s favourite rocking American – Mr Andrew WK!

“You go and tell your friends that you’re my friend!” Pretty damn positive I think, and ideal to usher in the new world order that Obama is rocking… I’d be surprised if he doesn’t buy one himself! Hope you like it… Logo is below, they’re very high quality fabric and we currently have them in YL, S, M and L.

Alcocroc

If he does want one, he better be quick though – because in true Alcopop style, we’re limiting this run of shirts to a profoundly small number (I’m talking 20 here), so that all the coolest kids can forever prove that they were on it before anyone else. I’m not saying we’ll not reuse the design (‘cos we love it) but this is the only time the shirts will be available in yellow on green.

So if you fancy getting a little PoP, and shamelessly promoting our logo all about your town – head over to the shop… and purchase for £8. Oh, and remember that although we do charge postage (sorry), it’s only 50p – and that 50p will cover whatever you want, whatever you like, whatever you say, you pay your money, you take your choice etc.

Much love…
