Alcopop! featured in RockSound

We should probably have invested in a scanner, but here it is in all its camera-phone snapped, lens flared glory… Alcopop! Records profile in this months RockSound Magazine, where we talk about puking with Andrew WK, killer releases and tell you who we most want to sign.

Allllllriiiiight… We do love that magazine. NB – this story was supposed to run with a photo of Kev and I, but we don’t have any of us together that aren’t awful – and we decided to go with my face as I was the looker *ahem* ;-)

Wolf Am I in Rocksound magazine

Ah I love Rocksound… It’s a great rag, and even more so with some Alcopop presence amidst its hallowed pages. This month it’s Alcopop’s newest recruits Wolf Am I, literally one of the best bands you will hear this year I promise you. Take a listen to them over at their MySpace, read the piece below and get all excited about June 22nd. Ole!

Alcopop Records 5-a-side team to feature Peter Beardsley?

Oh what a night or twain – I’m suffering for it now a touch, but after Fridays sojourn to a strange reggae meets trip hop night in Oxford (where they gleefully played Chaka Demus + Pliers as well as Red Dragon feat. Brian and Tony Gold, yet decided to baulk at my request for Sweat by The Inner Circle), and Thursdays trip to London to see goFASTER>> – it’s certainly been a cracking couple of days.

For not only did we meet up with some seriously ace management types and all but put pen to paper on a really exciting new release that’s liable to get summery hearts singing across the Alcopop nation, but it seems that a whole lot of the label family have fingers firmly placed in the footballing pie (at the same time as having all their other appendages firmly stuck into music of course).

For in deep, drunken discussion with all and sundry about the very serious issue of the BSM 5-a-side tournament (which will be taking place late July), we discovered that not only did Chris goFASTER>> go to the same school as Jamie Carragher, but Ian GF knew ex-Liverpool keeper Mike Hooper (now a bouncer in Liverpool incidentally) and our new pal Nick has played 5-a-side with Peter Beardsley!

So look out fellow teams – Get Cape may have won the first BSM footy shindig – but Alcopop are piling on the pressure for the next one, with a team that now represents more a team of all time Premiership heroes than Alcopop records. Ah well, I’m all about the glory – and there’s just a slight suspicion that our Peter, Mike and even Jamie might have more important things to do than turn up at the Linford Christie Sports Centre to ply their trade amongst hungover bands and fat magazine freelancers (we’re saying nothing Rocksound – NB we beat them 5-2 last year J) come the summer months.

In case they don’t though – here’s the proposed Alcopop side for this year….

GK – Mike Hooper

DF – Jamie Carragher

Jack (me)

MF – Ian from goFASTER>>

ST – Peter Beardsley

More squad options to be announced later – with Carragher possibly dropped from the starting line up in place of Nima Hush the Many or one of CTBW – I’m yet to ask them J

Have a great weekend!

Handsome Peter Beardsley

Seems everyone is considering Beardo coming out of retirement!

Let 4 or 5 Magician’s Dan Orms ‘be’ Praised

tesco_valentines_card.jpg

As many of you will doubtless already know, the latest (and last) in the Alcopop! Singes club range, limited to a staggeringly rare 500 copies all in hand-numbered, cardboard sleeves, was the rather super Forever on the Edge debut by 4 or 5 Magicians – a well honed homage to seeking fame on a Tesco Value budget. The band, fronted by the irrepressible Dan Ormsby, has been described by industry insiders (or Jack and Kev as we’re better known) as “Brilliant Weezer meets Pavement style pop from Brighton”… It’s been widely praised by proper people too.

Thought I’d share just some of the press quotes so far with you, and if you fancy a listen, head over to their MySpace page – You can buy it here too, but hurry cos’ they won’t be hanging around for too long…

SINGLE OF THE MONTH Oct 2007 – “a monumentally fuzz drenched summer anthem for the slacker generation missing the greats!” – subba-cultcha.com

SINGLE OF THE WEEK Oct 18th 2007 – “A fine fine debut slice of English alt.rock … we want everyone to form an orderly queue and pin all your hopes on these four or five fine magicians” – Organart

Really, really exciting” + “brilliant” + various other synonyms – Huw Stephens, Radio 1 (who invited the boys in for a session)

At last a believeable British retort to the drawling rambles of Stephen Malkmus. Think Hefner’s Darren Hayman fronting Guided By Voices. Ace.” Music Week

the sort of lo-fi attack jam that Kurt Cobain would have creamed over” – Rocksound

recalls the brilliant early 90′s” – The Fly

Can’t argue with those really!
